My mother came over to my apartment for a proper meal for the first time a few weeks ago, a night when my Georg and her Doug had trotted off to Cincinnati for a baseball game. It felt nice to have her over and I felt very mature. The last time (and only other) time she came over for food was when I'd just moved in and we had to sit on the floor for lack of dining furniture. I made herb-cheese stuffed portobellos and wilted spinach.
This night I did manage to have some dining furniture and I made a meal I thought she'd really like: salmon poached in white wine with lemons on a bed of arugula with a cucumber-mint-lemon-yogurt sauce, pesto potato salad, and thyme roasted whole carrots. There was enough wine left over from the poaching for us to get sufficiently toasty, and it was a meal over which we could linger and talk.
