your fruit of the month

Remember the drink Georg had last Sunday that came with a mysterious fruit garnish? Well, I was browsing in a new grocery store I found (Merkur, sort of like Whole Foods without all the pretentiousness and ridiculously high prices) and I saw the fruits! Even better, an entire basket was only euro 1.29. So I snapped them up! Turns out they are called El Tesoro Fruits. Since I discovered dragonfruit last month and this Columbian delight this month, I figure I could start hunting down new and unusual fruits every month for my blog. So...your November fruit of the month is the El Tesoro Fruit. Please enjoy my photo essay explaining the finer details concerning this fruit.
A single, untouched fruitI know, I went kind of overboard taking pictures of this fruit. Here's another basket shot of my El Tesoro bounty.

The papery skin has to be peeled back in order to eat the fruit. It's like a tomatillo's skin, but more delicate.
The inside is kind of like a tomato, only with tiny seeds. It tastes sweet and tropical, and around the base of the fruit where it connects with its skin, I swear it emits a sort of alcoholic-smelling syrup.
Edit on Nov 4 2007: Just kidding! A closer look at the fruit package + Wikipedia reveals that the actual name of this fruit is physalis. Since when is the fruit company's name larger than the actual product name on the package? It's probably a marketing ploy by El Tesoro Fruit, Inc. to make me think it's called that so I'll spread their name around. That's messed up. Anyway, I'll leave the blog post the same because I actually like the name El Tesoro Fruit better. So El Tesoro Fruit wins.
